Thursday's a Blessing!

For the past several months, Thursdays have not been my favorite day. Actually, since mid-January, Thursdays have been my least favorite day. I'm going to give God the glory anyway and say thank you Lord for giving me this day and then I'm going to use the power He gave me to change my outlook. I read somewhere (Marc Allen maybe?) that "if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." So I'm going to scrap the irritability and impatience that I usually use to deal with today's events and replace it with peace and gratitude. Today will be a day full of blessings.

So, on to the good word. Last I wrote, I had gained back all except one of the pounds I'd lost the previous week. Monday=273.8. Well, today is Thursday and Thursday=264.4. That's pretty good, huh? I'm very excited about the progress. I guess that's the kind of thing that can happen when you stick to a plan. Also, my chest has gone down another inch and my tummy has gone down 2 inches. Hey Hey Hey! My little mantra is, "Sweating off the toxins, shrinking up the fat cells..." That's what I try to remember to say when I'm exercising. If I'm watching one of the TVs at the gym or listening to a dope play list on my mp3, I usually forget to chant. Gotta work on that so I can get my mind and spirit in on this weight loss. I know they can do more wonders than just exercise alone. I really need to up the ante on this exercise too. I've only been going once a day in the morning time and I need to walk at least twice daily along with stretching and core work and strength training. I'm too excited to see the results when I add in those things!

Everyone, have a wonderful Thursday and may your day be full of blessings as well. I promise pics are coming soon! Thanks for reading!

Let's make it a Do-over

Hey y'all! Did you think about me over the weekend? Did you wonder if I was able to stick to my diet during all the weekend fun? Well...today I weighed in at a big fat 273.8lbs so that should answer your question. I ended up skipping the shakes all together, eating one or two meals a day and I stopped counting calories. Saturday wasn't too bad but hell, Sunday I indulged in an iced caramel latte with soup and a toasted wheat bagel with honey butter spread and a blueberry muffin and then munched on 3 other bagels with cream cheese over the course of the day. Then ended with a late dinner of spaghetti and salad and garlic bread. Now you know that ain't right. Yes, people. Self-sabotage. It's an ugly thing. I gained back all but one of the pounds I lost. Too bad. So sad. Yet another lesson learned. On to the next one. But not so fast...

One thing that is sticking with me is something that I heard on an episode of Made. If you've been hiding under a rock for the past like 10 years or haven't had cable or even worse, you just don't watch MTV-Made is a reality show which chronicles high school kids who want to achieve a certain goal which is very much outside and contradictory to their usual routine and personality. Example: Nerdy, chubby, never-been-kissed dude wants to become a ladies man. Dude gets paired with a "Made Coach" who helps him to accomplish (or get as close to it) his goal in 6 weeks. Honestly, I can't even remember what this particular Made was about because I've seen so many but inevitably the quirky teen in question at some point in the program always decides to half-ass it or give up before ultimately getting their ass chewed off by the Made Coach and deciding to give it another go. Maybe they didn't watch the previous shows (under the same rock as whomever reading this has never heard of Made) or didn't seem to think that whatever it was they were choosing to go for wasn't going to be as much hard work as the other ne'er-do-wells. Anywho, in this episode, a guy who was assisting the Made Coach in some way had just witnessed teenage girl do a horrible practice run of whatever the talent was she had been learning over the past several weeks. And he asked her, "So...you're doing all this hard work...to fail?" And as simple as the sarcastic statement was, it made so much sense. Why do all the hard work just to sabotage your own success?????? She could've stayed in her boring little life and never called MTV to interrupt it. But since she did, and made all these sacrifices, why not give it your very best and not give up? It's only 6 weeks right? Now lets apply it to me. It's only 140lbs right? At some point, the race will be over but right now, I have to keep running. It only makes sense to. Why engage in a whole 5 days worth of sticking to the plan just to make all the hard work insignificant in the next 2? Why do all the hard work just to fail? So I'm deciding now that I'm not going to be a failure. I'm pushing on and looking straight ahead.

I didn't measure myself today nor did I take any pictures. I thought that with gaining back the weight, there couldn't be much of a difference. So, let's make it a do-over and I'll make sure you'll have those next week. For now I'm off to sip my sizzerp! Thanks for reading!

First Friday Check-In

It's Friday! TGIF Everybody!

I made it almost a whole week on this diet! Sort-of lol! I've faltered. I'm human. But what I'm proud of is that I have kept moving on instead of giving up. I'm even more proud that my mess-ups didn't include a foresaking of my diet and calorie count. It was just that I got busy, lost track of taking my shakes every hour and for the last 2 days, I only had a total of 5 shakes. If anyone else is planning on doing this diet, my advice for you is to not skip the shakes! They help to manage your hunger!

Wednesday, I was pretty busy with my daughter and wasn't paying attention to time and ended up only drinking 3 out of 7 shakes that day so by the time dinner came (which was later than usual) I was so hungry! I tried to ignore it but I ended up eating 2 small salads and a piece of buttered bread to hold me over until dinner was ready. Then, when dinner was ready less than an hour later, I had a whole chicken breast (with skin), about 2 tablespoons of rice and a heaping helping of veggies. I really don't think I went over my 12oo per day calorie count but the skipping meals and one big heavy meal so late in the day was a no-no. It defeats the purpose of the whole diet which is to give a turbo-boost to my metabolism.

Thursday, I tried to do better but I don't know what happened. I barely drank any water, I only had 2 shakes and I ended up eating dinner even later (around 9:30pm) due to my daughter's dance class. Okay, who am I foolin? No excuses. I could've had dinner before dance which started at 5 or even during dance but I just didn't prepare to do so. So that's my story and I'm stickin to it. I'm not so proud of these stumbles along my path but I have full faith in my ability to stay on track and lose the weight.

Numbers Update:
Thursday morning I weighed in at 268.8 which gave me a total of 6 lbs lost since Monday. I also had a tinkering to measure myself for some reason and I lost 1 1/2 inches in my chest and 1 in my tummy. Yay me!!!!!

This morning I weighed in at dunh-dunh-dunnnnnnnhhhhh...271 and I know it was due to my LACK of eating and eating so late the last 2 days. Don't cry for me though! I'm taking it as a learning lesson.

Some good news: I finally went to the gym this morning! I plan to go later this evening as well, after my dinner and movie date (A Nightmare on Elm Street-yikes! Lol) with an old friend. I'm hoping to convince her to go along with me although I'm pretty sure I'll get shut down. I don't really think she's the work-out type. That's okay though. If she won't go, I'll go by myself.

So, that's that. The First Friday Check-In. My next blog will be Monday morning wherein I'll give the first weeks numbers and hopefully have 2 sets of before pics to show. Thanks for reading!

Day Three

Hey all-

This is going to be a quick update. I'm going strong on the diet but I still haven't made gym time. In fact I've been spending time creating a nice, inviting work out space in my basement along with all the other things on my to-do list. I'm not forsaking the gym all together. I love my Planet Fitness. Actually, I miss it too. Gotta make time to get there. And I will! My normal routine had been waking up at 4:30am to get to the gym by 5 and workout for about an hour and 15 minutes so that I could get home before my husband went to work. Doing it that way made me not have to rely on someone watching my daughter while I went to the gym. I don't really like waiting until my husband gets home to go because by that time (6:30 or later) I'm tired and don't want to go. By that time I'm ready to eat my dinner and watch some tv. But I do understand that if I want change, I've got to change it up. So, I will be at PF tomorrow morning. I will be doing my afternoon neighborhood walk with my daughter followed by some soul stretching and quiet prayer and meditation time. I will be downstairs tomorrow after dinner doing more treadmill play (as opposed to work!) followed by some core work and overall body strengthening. Sounds fun, I know.

I did go ahead and measure myself yesterday and I weighed myself today. Sound the horns!!!
I lost another 2.2 lbs making it a total weight loss of 5.4 lbs in 2 days of diet. Looks good to me. I know I'll be looking fly for my birthday next month! Well, fly-errr! LOL! My measurements were a shocker but I'll post them anyway: 55 1/2 chest, 53 tummy, 51 hips, 17 right arm, 28 right thigh. I'm so excited to see those trickle down. And when I say trickle, I mean blast away with the quickness lol ("in an easy and relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way!" as I was introduced to by Impatient Dieter at www.easywayshow.com and came to understand more about through Marc Allen www.marcallen.com )

So there you have it! Day 3 update for ya. It's almost time for me to sip on my sizzerp so I'm outtie. Once again and as always, thanks for reading!

Day Two

Well, I made it a whole day on this diet:

9:30 1st shake and 8-12oz water
10:30 2nd shake and 8-12oz of water
11:30 3rd shake and 8-12oz of water
12:30 a 250 calorie meal (This one happened to be a 260 calorie Lean Cuisine) and 8-12oz water
1:30 4th shake and 8-12oz water
2:30 5th shake and 8-12oz water
3:30 6th shake and 8-12oz water
4:30 7th shake and 8-12 oz water
5:30 was supposed to be my second and last 250 calorie meal (and water of course-see the pattern?) but I didn't get home to eat until ten minutes after 7. This time I had a 240 calorie Santa Fe chicken salad already prepared.

Did I really stick to that?!? Kind of. Sort of. Mostly. Lol. Well, all was going good until 5:30 when I was still stuck in the library trying to find some audio books that were not where they were supposed to be. I think my body was already used to eating every hour because I became pretty hungry and I hadn't been hungry all day! So when I did get home, first thing I did was toss up my salad and chow down. After that, I still felt hungry and I was trying to ignore it but my daughter was hungry and snacking on buttery Club crackers (one of my faves). So, unfortunately, I did eat 2 crackers before looking at the box label and seeing that I just consumed 35 friggin' calories of nothingness. And when I heated up her soup (homemade chicken noodle) I ate a spoonful to test how hot it was (habit.) After I drank another glass of water though, I was fine.

I'm not even going to fake the funk and say that I worked out. I didn't. I always have a hard time making the gym on Mondays. And maybe that would've made the difference on the scale this morning. I refuse to dwell on mistakes and things that can not be re-written though so, I'm over it and I will be at the gym today (right after I finish this blog actually.)

The person who I mentioned yesterday that put this diet together has a log of how quickly she lost her weight by not only taking daily pics but weighing herself daily. My plan was not to do that. I am going to take a pic of myself, measure myself and weigh myself weekly. However, I couldn't resist the urge to jump on the scale this morning and see if there was any progress made. Well, I knew there would be progress but would it be as much as the "Impatient Dieter" herself???? She lost 10lbs on her very first day and 32 by the end of her very first week. Homegirl gave fat a body slam, okay?!? (See her at http://www.easywayshow.com/)

I'm not "Impatient Dieter" but my archenemy Big did get a beat down yesterday with a total weight loss of 3.6lbs. Not bad for not hitting the gym right? Now I have to see if hitting the gym today will make a bigger difference in my weight tomorrow. Then I'll stick to weekly weigh-ins. I have to say though that even in a day, my clothes feel more comfy. I think my stomach has gone down a bit. I wish I had measured myself already but I didn't. I will take my measurements today for you all. Thanks for tuning in and a special shot out to my one subscriber Malicia! Muah! Love u girl! Thanks for reading.

Day One

This morning I started my journey of losing weight and keeping it off. Somewhere around 1am, my husband took my "before" pictures. Around 9am, I weighed in at what is going to be the heaviest weight of my life because I'm never going to ever be that size again. I'm sure you want to know what it is and I'll tell you because I'm not ashamed of it anymore. It happened. And we all know, shit happens! My unhealthy lifestyle which included overeating, no exercise, lots of unappetizing fast food, eating heavy meals very late (followed by immediate sleep) and bouts of fulfilling week-long sweet-tooth cravings with unmentionables has led me to 274.8 pounds at the age of 30. Whew, feels good to admit that. And it feels even better to know that I have a course of action that should prevent me from living that lifestyle again. But before I engage you with my plan, let me put you up on some back story.

In my youth, there was teasing. Kids tease. Why? I'm really not sure. But they do. I wouldn't say that I was made fun of excessively like you see on some television shows. I wasn't even teased as badly as some of the other kids that I went to school with. That doesn't make it okay but I'm just saying that it didn't have me in tears or feeling like I couldn't face school the next day. I still liked school and I still had plenty of friends. After all, even my dad made comments about how "healthy" I was and how "skinny" my friends and cousins were. So, I didn't think the things some of the kids said had an impact on me...but it did. Looking back, I realize that I accepted what they said as truth. I looked in the mirror and I did see fat and I continued to see fat up until I really was fat. The crazy thing about it is that I never was fat as a kid or a high-schooler. I was just bigger than the slight majority. But, when I did start to pick up unhealthy habits and put on excess weight, I didn't even notice because my self image was so altered. For instance, the dress I wore for homecoming in 11Th grade was a size 9. But when I tell you I didn't believe that 9, instead I saw 16, I'm not playing. Most of the other girls including my best friend wore size 7. And let me tell you, unlike most of the girls, I was blessed with breasts and behind and lovely thick thighs while they were still rockin' bird chests and string beans for calves. I was strong and healthy and cute. (I'm not gonna front, I always thought I was cute-just plump and cute lol.) With 12 grade came a shorter schedule that didn't include lunch nor activity which meant I was eating junk food all day and the only exercise I was getting was the stairs at school and the walk from the bus stop. The weight packed on. I was a 10 at homecoming and a 12 by graduation.

College was no better. Freshman 15? Ha! How about freshman 30! There at the age of 17, a women's size 14/16 was my friend. You think kids are not the nicest? Try drunken frat boys and boys you turn down and skinny girls who are jealous that you have a cute, faithful boyfriend and they have nothing. This time around though, I couldn't shake off the comments that easy. They affected me deeply. As the next few years rolled on, I hit 205 lbs, depression, size 18/20 and not only did I think I was extra fat, I was beginning to think I was hopelessly unattractive as well. Crazy, I know, cuz I'm too cute! Lol! I was living with my 2 very best friends in a nice 3 bedroom apartment and they never saw me because I was always hiding out in my room wanting to be sad and alone.

Things didn't work out with the apartment and I moved back to my parents house in Detroit and commuted the 35 minutes to classes. Being back in my parents house under my father's watch and criticism gave me the push to lose weight. I didn't have anything else to do and I'd be doggone if I was going to let dad call me all types of lazy and fat. The very next day I started an exercise regimen and began to eat the famous low-carb way while taking Metabolife. (All very popular in 1999.) I lost weight and I lost it quickly. 50+ pounds off in matter of a few months. I was turning heads and fitting into sizes I never fit before. Would you believe I got into a 4? I got a boyfriend and got busy with a life that led me away from the low-carb eating and exercising that I'd grown to know and the weight started coming back along with my self-doubt. What really didn't help was that my boyfriend became my biggest low-self esteem contributor with horrible comments he'd make when I'd upset him for whatever reason. As you see with a lot of people that have done with low carb, after the diet is off, the weight comes back double and triple. Hmm-lessee, today I was 274 and then I was 151 so I was really close to gaining back triple my initial weight loss.

My weight has fluctuated over the years due to trying to go back on low carb and failing ( I just can not deprive myself like that anymore.) Sometime last year, I read a book that detailed how bad low-carb diets were and I told myself that I'd never do that diet again. The problem is that I'm impatient. I want the weight to get the hell outta dodge. Yes, I've come to a point where I love and treasure and accept myself but the weight is getting in my way! I want it gone, like, yesterday! Lol. Because I want results so fast, I always contemplate going back on that low carb diet to drop 5 pounds a week but I can never stick to it because there are so many things that are good for you that I refuse to do without. This indecisiveness over dieting has led to no diet at all, (which is not good) but has led to me working out several times a week. Last year October, I joined a fitness club that caters to plus sized women. I weighed in at 282 and got down to 269 by the end of December. I felt stronger and healthier and more flexible and just great all around but I knew I had to incorporate better eating at some point. The fitness club I was going to closed mid-January and I hit a stand-still until joining Planet Fitness several weeks and pounds later. The good thing is that I haven't gained anymore weight since joining and now I have a plan that should make this weight fall off pretty fast (I did say I was impatient!)

So, if you stuck with me through that long back story, this is the point where I tell you my plan. I'm braving up to big. I'm not going to be afraid of failure. In fact, failure is certainly not an option. I'm going to kick big's ass! Big is going to be afraid of me! Lol. For the time being, I am giving my metabolism a jump start by taking in 9 meals a day with a total calorie count being no more than 1200 calories. (7 of these meals are fabulous 100 calorie meal replacement shakes and the other 2 are regular meals that total 250 each.) I'm also going to exercise three times daily as opposed to once every other day. That may sound a bit much for most but I do love to exercise. It makes me feel wonderful. Plus studies show breaking up exercise into 2 or 3 times daily burns a greater percentage of fat and I'm all for that. Now, I must say that I am not the genius that concocted this basic plan, but I am catering it to my needs and wants. If you want to see the originator and what she accomplished in such a short time, see http://www.easywayshow.com/ She is amazing!

That's all I have for you today. Hopefully I can upload my before pics soon but I'll post another entry tomorrow detailing my first day. I invite you to read along on my journey to a fabulous, healthy, active life. Thanks for reading.
